Soap - Good enough to eat!

There's something about handmade soap that makes me want to eat it! Don't worry I never have, it just looks so asthetically pleasing that it looks edible. I have to admit that I know nothing about soap making
but love to buy it for our home or for gifts.

See what I mean, Oreo cookies & milk, or is it?

Now it seems that aswell as many fragrance combinations there are different processes involved in soap making, including traditional cold and hot process soaps, glycerin or natural liquid soaps.

I have discovered today that soap makers have their own guild, The Guild of Craft Soap and Toiletry Manufacturers.  The Guild was formed in September 2007 and has two main aims -

(1) To raise awareness of the legislative standards that are in place that apply to craft soap and toiletry makers
(2) To register as members of the Guild crafters who work in compliance with this legislation and who hold relevant public liability insurance

Information taken from GCSTM website.

So whether you prefer the gorgeous slices from soap bars or novelty shapes there is plenty of choice, just on Folksy, with a selection of over 400 soaps.

Lovely images - however, there is EU legislation in place the prohibits the sale of items that are food like but not actual food. Unfortunately, items like the Oreo Cookie soap (as lovely as it is) come under this legislation. I have the BEST cupcake mould ever and just cannot use it for soaps as the legislation prohibits the sale of such soaps (even giving it away as presents is prohibited!!).

Some makers state that their local Trading Standards allow the sale of these, and some Trading Standards are totally against it .. however, there shouldn't be confusion around it.

It really is a pity because these soaps are just lovely and I'd LOVE to be able to sell my cupcake soaps but I'm afraid that it's not possible.

If you (or your readers) would like to read more about it, check out http://www.opsi.gov.uk/SI/si1989/Uksi_19891291_en_1.htm and there's a post on the Folksy forum itself about it http://forums.folksy.com/forums/6/topics/10394

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information. I think it is really important to be aware of the legalities in producing anything to save problems at a later date.

Thanks
Zoe
